Cheap hair transplants have killed people in India. So has an expensive one. The variable that actually decides whether you walk out safely is neither the price nor the technique — it is whether the person holding the punch is legally allowed to hold it. How do you choose a hair transplant clinic in Bhubaneswar?
Verify the surgeon's qualification first — everything else is secondary. India's National Medical Commission permits only two qualifications to perform hair transplantation: MD/DNB in Dermatology, or MCh/DNB in Plastic Surgery. Four people who chose a hair transplant clinic badly
These are not cautionary hypotheticals. They are reported deaths, in Indian clinics, in the last few years. Read the prices carefully — because the lesson is not the one you expect.
We include them not to frighten you out of a hair transplant. It is a safe procedure in competent hands. We include them because in every one of these cases, the warning signs were visible before the patient paid.
Two engineers, one dentist
Mayank Katiyar died in November 2024, a day after his transplant. Vineet Kumar Dubey died in March 2025, within 48 hours of his. Both developed severe facial swelling and infection.
The procedures were carried out by Dr. Anushka Tiwari — a dentist, holding a BDS, with no hair transplant qualification, running an unlicensed clinic. She had marketed herself as a hair transplant specialist online. Police registered culpable homicide; she surrendered in May 2025 and was remanded to judicial custody.

He paid five lakh. He still died.
Shrawan Kumar Choudhary, 43, died the day after a 12-hour procedure at a private Mumbai clinic. He had asked for 9,000 grafts in a single sitting. Complications began at around 3,700. The likely cause of death was anaphylactic shock.
The Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons of India was blunt afterwards: they do not plan more than 2,500–3,000 grafts in one sitting, completed in 6–8 hours, because prolonged time and extended anaesthesia compound risk.
This is the case that breaks the "cheap is dangerous" argument. Price did not save him. A surgeon willing to say no would have.

₹30,000, then septic shock
A patient who paid ₹30,000 developed a painful scalp, then swelling across the face and shoulders, and died during treatment. The recorded cause was septic shock with multi-organ failure.
The case prompted the Delhi High Court to demand a national protocol, and to state plainly that hair transplantation is aesthetic surgery requiring a qualified dermatologist or trained surgeon. The court also directed action against salons performing transplants without medical supervision.

The clinic staff ran away
A Bihar Military Police constable, Manoranjan Paswan, underwent a transplant at a private Patna clinic. He began complaining of itching immediately. His condition deteriorated. He died in the ICU.
The doctors and nursing staff of the clinic fled after the incident. A treating doctor suggested it was a reaction to medication given during the procedure.
The detail worth holding on to: a clinic that cannot manage a complication is a clinic that will not be there when you have one.

India names exactly two qualifications. Most clinics have neither.
After the Delhi High Court demanded a national standard, the NMC's Ethics Board issued guidelines on aesthetic surgery and hair transplantation. They are unusually specific, and almost nobody in this industry talks about them — because most clinics would fail.
Hair transplantation may be performed only by a properly trained, licensed Registered Medical Practitioner of modern medicine. The NMC recommends two qualifications, noting that both carry hair transplantation as a core topic in their curriculum:
The guidelines go further. Assistants and OT technicians must come from a medical background — nurses, lab technicians, pharmacists — and must be systematically trained, with responsibility resting on the doctor. The clinic must have a day-care theatre equipped to handle emergencies, including emergency drugs and anaesthetic apparatus.

What this means in Bhubaneswar, practically

"Certified by [training academy]", "15 years experience", "trained abroad" and "BDS" are not answers to that question. Graft survival — the number that decides your result
Extracting a follicle is easy. Getting it to grow is not. Survival depends on how long grafts spend out of the body, the holding solution, temperature control, handling under magnification, and implantation angle and depth. The willingness to lose the sale
The most expensive thing a good clinic does is turn people away. Unstable hair loss, insufficient donor density, unrealistic expectations, a request for 9,000 grafts — a surgeon who says no to these earns nothing that day. A clinic that says yes to everything has told you what it optimises for.

Those are not the same sentence.
Is a hair transplant safe?
In competent hands, yes — it is a day-care procedure under local anaesthesia with a very low complication rate. The deaths that make the news are not failures of the operation; they are failures of the people and premises. Every reported Indian fatality shares at least one of three features: an unqualified operator, no capacity to manage an emergency, or an over-large session agreed to please the patient. All three are checkable in advance, which is the entire purpose of the scorecard above.
Should I choose the cheapest hair transplant clinic in Bhubaneswar?
